European Union Allowances

The EU Emissions Trading System, which permit the emission of one tonne of carbon dioxide (CO₂) or its equivalent. EUAs are a cornerstone of the EU’s climate policy, designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a market-based mechanism.

The EUA lifecycle can be divided into three steps:

1. Purchasing allowances on the primary market (auctions) or secondary market (OTC)

2. EUA portfolio management (holding, trading and cost optimization)

3. Cancellation of allowances for the purpose of settling emissions in accordance with regulatory obligations

EUA allowances are fully transferable, meaning they can be traded – purchased, sold, or transferred between entities within the EU ETS market.
